Lowry, Ortiz and the Volcano

One of the finest privileges that may have a human being in the professional is able to translate and publish a work, and if this is an exceptional work of art it is even better now that it accurately and with reliability is almost a miracle, only own a medium or an initiate. Such is the case and the fate of Raul Ortiz and Ortiz, whose pen and magic in the Hispanic world know the masterpiece of Malcolm Lowry: Under the Volcano. Fortunately, the Mr Ortiz ended in 1964, after years of hard work in Cuernavaca, the translation of the titanic novel, arguably the best written by a foreigner on Mexico and from there, generations of Spanish-speaking parishioners have followed in the footsteps of the English writer. His translation has been praised by various writers and remains the only necessary because it was not another. As if this were not enough Mr Ortiz has followed since Lowry's work promoting in the most diverse ways, met the author's wife, Margerie Bonner, convinced her to return to Mexico and was received with honors, he showed with no major setbacks the novel scenarios of her husband's novel, she answered giving him a series of photographs and other objects that belonged to Lowry, and carried a beautiful and fruitful friendship that lasted a lifetime, unfortunately Margerie died September 28, 1988. Ortiz has even translated other lowrian texts as for example the short story "Under the Volcano" and has been the main promoter of Lowry's work in Mexico, so to have the opportunity to present the Archive Lowry, a testimonial book on the work of Raul Ortiz beyond the mere translation of Under the Volcano is an immense privilege and even more splendid part of the Blue House of Frida Kahlo, Mexican artist of European parents with whom Lowry had curious coincidences: both parents were Europeans, they lived and were enamored of Mexico, both born in the first decade of the twentieth century, died at age 47, hated the war, Lowry cheated Jan with prostitutes and Frida cheated on Diego with Trotsky, in 1937 Lowry became arrived in Oaxaca and Trotsky in Mexico, even the consul (alter ego of Lowry in Under the Volcano) is mistaken for Trotsky in the final chapter of the novel ... so as to present here the Archive Lowry seems like a pretty happy coincidence and this happening on a day of the dead becomes the ideal framework to bring back to life the work of English writer who suffered and drank in Mexico, but above all loved.But back to the translation of Under the Volcano, this was a crucial parcel, the novel was conceived in Mexico with various word games, puns and rhetorical turns intricated that required someone with deep knowledge of Mexican culture and cultural background English literature which refers constantly Lowry, otherwise endless chain of mistakes would have been total misunderstanding of the message he wanted to convey, Lowry expecting an excellent translator for his novel, he cared very much that was not bad interpreted in any context, but especially in Mexico, which had inspired his work and where he had suffered and loved more deeply than was what he wanted: to live fully and write.Finally, in this 2011 comes to light this compendium of evidence and testimony of the vast and profound work of Raul Ortiz, it was necessary for all those studying the work of Lowry. We greatly appreciate having to reach both images, such as original texts, and privileged information that is published today in this book indispensable for all lowriano. We also thank the Institute of Culture of Morelos, which, assuming responsibility takes its rightful Lowry's work, a true promoter of culture of the state of Morelos and follows up the work that has been developed on the author. Thanks mainly to Angel Cuevas who has been permanently with our friend Raul Ortiz, standing on the organization we have today Lowry Archive on the hands. Congratulations to them both and thank you all.

Uno de los privilegios más hermosos que puede tener un
ser humano en el ámbito profesional es poder traducir y publicar una obra, y si
se trata de una obra de arte excepcional pues es todavía mejor, ahora que
hacerlo con precisión y con solvencia es casi un milagro, sólo propio de un
médium o de un iniciado. Tal es el caso y la suerte de Raúl Ortiz y Ortiz, por
cuya pluma y magia conocemos en el mundo hispano la obra cumbre de Malcolm
Lowry: Bajo el volcán. Por fortuna,
el maestro Ortiz terminó en 1964, luego de años de intenso trabajo en
Cuernavaca, la traducción de la titánica novela de Lowry, sin duda la mejor
escrita por un extranjero sobre México y a partir de ahí, generaciones de
feligreses de habla hispana han seguido los pasos del escritor inglés. Su
traducción ha sido elogiada por diversos escritores y sigue siendo la única pues
no fue necesaria otra más. Por si esto fuera poco el maestro Ortiz ha seguido
desde entonces promoviendo la obra de Lowry de las más diversas maneras:
conoció a la esposa del autor; Margerie Bonner, la convenció de que regresara a
México y fue recibida con honores, le mostró sin mayores contratiempos los
escenarios de la novela de su marido, ella le correspondió obsequiándole una
serie de fotografías y demás objetos que pertenecieron a Lowry, y llevaron una
hermosa y fructífera amistad que duró toda la vida, desafortunadamente Margerie
murió el 28 de septiembre de 1988. Ortiz incluso ha traducido otros textos lowrianos como el cuento “Bajo el
volcán” y ha sido el principal promotor de la obra de Lowry en México, de tal
manera que tener la oportunidad de presentar el Archivo Lowry, un libro testimonial sobre la labor de Raúl Ortiz
más allá de la mera traducción de Bajo el
volcán es un privilegio inmenso y más aún en el marco esplendoroso de la
Casa Azul de Frida Kahlo, artista mexicana de padres europeos con quien Lowry
tenía curiosas coincidencias: ambos eran padres de europeos, ambos vivían y
estaban enamorados de México, ambos nacieron en la primera década del siglo XX,
murieron a los 47 años, odiaban la guerra, Lowry engañaba a Jan con prostitutas
y Frida engañaba a Diego con Trotsky, en 1937 Lowry llegó a Oaxaca y Trotsky
llegó a México, incluso el cónsul (alter ego de Lowry en Bajo el volcán) es confundido con Trotsky en el capítulo final de
la novela… de manera que presentar aquí el Archivo Lowry me parece una feliz y
bella coincidencia que, en un día de muertos se convierte en el marco ideal
para traer nuevamente a la vida la obra del escritor inglés que sufría y bebía
en México, pero que sobre todo amaba.
Pero volviendo a la traducción de Bajo el volcán; se trataba de una encomienda crucial; la novela fue
concebida en México con diversos juegos de palabras, retruécanos y giros
retóricos intricadísimos que requerían alguien con el conocimiento profundo de
la cultura mexicana así como el bagaje cultural de la literatura inglesa a la
que Lowry constantemente hace referencia, de lo contrario una cadena de errores
interminables nos hubiera llevado a la incomprensión total del mensaje que
Lowry quería transmitirnos, Lowry esperaba un excelente traductor para su
novela, le importaba muchísimo que no fuera mal interpretado en ningún
contexto, pero especialmente en México, país que le había inspirado su obra y
lugar donde había sufrido y amado con mayor intensidad que era lo que él
deseaba: vivir al máximo y escribirlo.
Finalmente en este 2011 surge a la luz este compendio
de pruebas y testimonios de la labor amplísima y profunda de Raúl Ortiz, mismo
que era necesario para todos aquellos estudiosos de la obra de Lowry. Apreciamos
enormemente tener al alcance de la mano tanto imágenes, como textos originales,
e información privilegiada que se publica hoy en este libro indispensable para
todo lowriano. Debemos agradecer
también al Instituto de Cultura de Morelos, el cual, asumiendo la
responsabilidad que le corresponde retoma la obra de Lowry, auténtico promotor
de la cultura del estado de Morelos y le da seguimiento al trabajo que se ha
desarrollado sobre el autor. Gracias principalmente a Ángel Cuevas quien ha
estado permanentemente con nuestro amigo Raúl Ortiz, apoyándolo en la
organización del Archivo Lowry que
hoy tenemos en las manos. Felicidades a los dos y gracias a todos.
